Thursday -- let's call it scramble day

The Florida weather has been an absolute perfect scenario for camp and today was another good one, they said it was supposed to be a high of 80, but I don't think it was that warm -- but we are talking 75 and sunny -- but a bit breezy today (lots of wind....but more on that later).

We get to check out the schedule and the schedule was laced with amazing matchups for today's games.  The morning games had the top 2 seeds against the bottom 2 seeds -- and in the afternoon the top seeds were facing off. So with that basic info it meant the middle seeds 3-7 were all playing each other -- with a bunch of 3-2 and 2-3 teams playing -- guess what? The perfect scenario of who will be where at the end of the day.

Game 7 (the team I am on) was one of those 3-2 teams and we played Team Smoke and We are family (2-3 and 3-2) before the day started.  Game 1 this morning - we were facing a solid pitcher, but we can hit those kind of pitchers -- we staked our pitcher out to a 8-0 lead and we gave up a couple runs in the top of 7th before winning 8-2. Our pitcher should have had a shutout but a couple errors led to the runs (keep that in mind). We head into our afternoon game and this blogger gets the mound. I was thinking this might be interesting - we had a stiff breeze coming in from right field and this lefty would potentially benefit from those steady wind gusts - my curveball could get some help - and well it did. I threw more curveballs today than i normally do and it was working out real well. Unfortunately I hit a couple batters and the Habig boys fouled off like 20 balls combined in their AB's (nice hitting guys....fun battles) and our defense was not as crisp as it could have been. I ended up giving up 3 runs (maybe 2 earned) and we won 9-4 (the math doesn't work...but hang with me*) and end up finishing the week at 5-2.

Final Camp Standings:

1) Coyote Uglies 5-2 (get the 1st seed with 2nd tiebreaker)
2) Game 7            5-2
3) Repeaters         5-2
4) Leftovers          4-3

5) Fantasize This  4-3
6) We are Family  3-4
7) Nite Crawlers   3-4
8) 40-40 Club       3-4

9)  Team Smoke  2-5
10) Dirty Dozen  1-6

So the first tiebreaker is runs against -- which I am fan, gives a good idea of the full week of how your team is performing -- a lot of campers are asking about "head to head" but with different times facing the teams during the week, not necessarily the best way to measure each team. We ended up having the same number of runs against (32) as Coyote Uglies (note - Repeaters had 33 runs against...), so the 2nd tiebreaker Runs scored goes into effect -- they edged us 67 to 53 - so here is the kicker - we lost to them 11-3 -- we gave up 6 runs in the 7th inning against them by kicking the ball around.....we could have done better, today we gave up 3 runs in the 7th innings of both games where the game was "in hand" -- so in any of those scenarios we give up one less run -- we are the #1 seed. So close.....but so far.  Regardless after having an 0-2 monday -- we end up the #2 seed was amazing. I really was questioning our team after monday - but we played the way I thought we could the rest of the week.

So playoff friday is here.

The 9 and 10 seeds will play at Hammond tomorrow morning in a "Friendly" -- so the upshot is they get a game in the big stadium -- not so shabby.....but that will be their final game of the week.

Matchups for tomorrow:

#1 vs #4 -- Uglies with Dave Hinnenkamp vs. Leftovers with Ryan Hess (should be a good one)
#2 vs #3 - Game 7 with Mark Wolfe vs Repeaters with Randy Lott (big assumption....but I think so)

#5 vs #8 - Fantasize This vs 40-40 Club (this is a great matchup, some questionable pinch runner situation today was a part of an afternoon softball game that went 18-15 in a F-this loss, so a revenge game??)
#6 vs #7 - We are Family vs Nite Crawlers - we played Family this afternoon and they are a good squad

The winners will move on the "championship game" on Saturday in the big stadium -- everyone wants to be there - let's hope Game 7 is one of those teams. A crazy wonderful day at camp.

* - if you were following along -- so I gave up 3 runs today in a 7 inning effort -- so where did that 4th run come from?  Well a teammate of mine had a good friend on the other team and if things worked out he wanted to pitch to him (they never had this situation - mostly due to being teammates all the time) so Dave asked me nicely if in the 7th inning if the game dictated the situation he could face off with his life long friend -- I was 100% (well maybe like 200%) in favor of this - this is the fun part. Dave didn't want to interrupt my rhythm or game or whatever and I was like -- let's do it! So the scenario played out - we are up 9-3 going into the 7th and guess who is leading off....his friend Eric (who is in the Twins Camp Hall of Fame) -- so worked out great, except Dave walked him as Eric worked a full count. Eric later scored as our SS booted one -- but it was fun and it all worked out and Eric/Dave were happy and it was fun. Glad it worked out for everyone. I ended up back on the mound after Dave's one batter encounter.
