Friday - Game 8 - Upper Division Playoff Game

Today's game featured overcast skies and the warmest morning with gametime temperatures hovering around 66 degrees. The Comets were ready to go with their #3 starter BM on the mound. BM features a good fastball, good curveball, and the ability to change speeds. The Comets played the Internationals - the winner moves on to the Championship game which will be played in Hammond Stadium tomorrow afternoon.

1st Inning - Internationals led off the inning with a double, the runner advanced to the third on a ground out for the first out. The next batter (probably their best hitter) popped out to first (nice play in foul territory by one of our favorite campers MW). The next hitter bounced out to third to end the inning without any runs. The Comets were facing a hard throwing lefty and went quietly in the first.

2nd Inning - BM pitched a nice top of the inning and took out the hitters for a 1-2-3 easy inning. The bottom of the inning is when Comets made some noise. After getting a single to lead off the inning, the following batter popped out to third. TD poked a single up the middle putting runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. PB stepped up to the batters box. The first pitch was a ball, the next pitch was in the dirt and both runners moved up to 2nd and 3rd base. The next pitch came and PB smacked a grounder just past the second baseman - BM scored to make it 1-0. TD was held at third but both PB and Tony Oliva at first were wondering why the third base coach (Lee Stange) held up the runner. The next batter struck out on three pitches and the inning ended on a slow grounder to 2nd. The Comets grab a 1-0 lead.

3rd, 4th & 5th Innings were highlighted by a few runners here and there but both pitchers were better than the hitters. PB led off the 5th with a BB but was stranded at 2nd base 4 batters later.

BM was pitching brilliantly and in the top of the sixth the Internationals did not muster up any baserunners. The bottom of the sixth started with a base hit. MW pinch ran as many of the players where not able to run the bases by the end of the week (some of them couldn't really 'run' the bases at the beginning of the week either). Another base hit moved MW up to 2nd base. 1st and 2nd nobody out. A pop out to the catcher (who made a brilliant catch) made it one out. A base hit into left field - MW was wheeling around third the left fielder came up firing but MW slid and was safe as the throw was up the first base line. 2-0 Comets.

The top of the 7th is here and BM was still pitching strong. A leadoff hit started the inning for the Internationals. BM struck out the next guy after having to throw 6 straight curveballs. The Internationals best hitter came up to the plate (He was 0 for 2 on the day) - he took strike one. The next pitch was a breaking ball over the middle of the plate. The batter zipped a line drive out to right field - PB, who was playing right center field (they were playing with four outfielders), ran over and snagged the line drive in right field saving a potential extra base hit from the batter. 2 outs - runner still on first. The batter hit a slow roller to third base, Dick Bremer fielded it and made a strong throw to first but the runner was safe by a step. The runner on first was able to advance to third on the play. 1st and 3rd - 2 outs. BM was able to induce a foul pop up in which he was able to catch to end the game! Comets 2, Internationals 0. A very good baseball game with great pitching and very solid defense.

The Cuban Comets are heading to the championship!! They will play on Saturday at 12:15pm in Hammond Stadium.

PB: 1 for 1, BB, GW RBI
MW: 1 for 2, Run

Cumulative Hitting:
PB: 9 for 19, .470
MW: 7 for 23, .304

The weather should be wonderful for tomorrow - the first pitch it should be around 75 degrees!

Many of the campers will be treated to the Pro Staff vs. The Rookies on Friday afternoon.
