Tales of the (mis)adventures of playing some baseball in Fort Myers, FL while pretending to be a real ballplayer in a Minnesota Twins uniform.

Friday - Rookies vs. Pro Staff Game / Kangaroo Court
The afternoon game featured the Rookies vs. the Pro Staff. The game was played in Hammond Stadium. The rookies were broken up into three different teams. PB was part of the first team. Bert Blyleven was on the mound for the Pro Staff. Each team was given the chance to bat through the order and then take the field. PB came to the plate versus Bert (after having been able to hit off of Blyleven in batting practice he felt confident going up there) and the first pitch was right on the corner - strike one. PB then took the next pitch right back up the middle for a base hit to center field. PB was forced out at 2nd as the next batter grounded back to Bert. PB took the field and was able to secure his spot at shortstop. Gene Larkin came up to bat first and promptly grounded to PB. PB scooped up the grounder threw it to first and the campers had the first out of the inning. The next defensive inning PB was not able to track a short fly ball in left center field as he was trying to make an over the shoulder catch the ball hit the heel of his glove and hit the ground. PB was able to redeem himself on the very next play as Juan Berenguer hit a ball up the middle - PB ranged over picked up the ground ball, touched second base and flipped to first for the easy double play!
MW played in the 2nd game and Frank Viola was on the mound. MW lined a hard hit right back at Frank, he snagged it and threw to second base, MW was on first via a fielders' choice. He later scored on a double by LS who hit one over Rick Miller in left field. MW played left field and was not able to get any put outs as the pro staff did not hit any fly balls into the outfield.
The campers ended up winning 4-3 as the third team of rookies rallied to score a few runs and hold the pro staff to zero runs.
Kangaroo Court was in session on Friday night - it featured many fines of which some of them were: players not wearing a hat in the field, a player wearing a helmet while playing 2nd base, players on cell phones in the dugout or on the field, a player going up to bat (get this....) without a bat, and many other funny little things that can happen at a baseball fantasy camp. The judges of kangaroo court are Bert Blyleven and Frank Quilici. (see picture with funny outfits) PB and MW were levied a $5 fine for beating the Pro's in the rookie/pro's game - otherwise they escaped any other problems in Kangaroo court. The funniest fine goes to Tom Brunansky and Frank Viola - both of them were fined for leaving early on Tuesday so they could go watch American Idol. (they did the same thing on Weds as well)
Look for a post on the championship game late Saturday or Sunday. Our favorite campers will be headed home on Sunday and at this time will be flying home DURING the Vikings game. Go Vikings!
