Sunday - Batting Practice and Rookie Tryouts
The adventure on Sunday featured cool weather in Fort Myers - by the time the campers arrived at the clubhouse at the Lee County Baseball Complex it was about 45 degrees, but a strong 15-20 mph wind making it feel even cooler. PB and MW arrived at their locker and uniforms were there ready to go. They dressed and went to the batting cages to warm up.
PB and MW both were able to hit off of Bert Blyleven in the cages - amazing! They both did a great job and PB was hit by Bert in the left hip after taking one back up the middle off of him. In good fun of course - PB commented, "He typically threw at the batter after they hit a couple good ones off of him - I probably could have moved out of the way, but this makes for a better story." MW had this to say about batting against Blyleven (soon to be in the Hall of Fame), "I took my first swing and went up the middle against him, he then started throwing up and in but I was able to hit his curveball - I was a little nervous but it felt good swinging the bat versus a future hall of famer."
PB and MW participated in the Rookie Tryout and both performed very well and impressed the "scouts" (Pro Staff that put together the teams). Both felt good about how they played despite the cold and windy conditions.
PB looked good on the mound - 3 IP, 2 Hits, 0 Runs, 1 BB, & 4 K's (two looking) and led off the game with a double.
MW did well going 2 for 3, 2 RBI's, 1 Run, and 1 IP, 2 Hits, 1 Run, 1 BB (his defense didn't help him....).
PB and MW await the naming of the teams this evening as the pro staff will be drafting teams based on their scouting.
